Responsibilities

· Build and lead the medicinal chemistry functional area, including internal and external FTEs and other resources

· Drive cross-functional project teams to achieve key research milestones such as lead identification, in vivo proof of concept, and development candidate nomination

· Manage PhD level scientists to a high level of productivity while improving the skills and knowledge of junior colleagues through mentoring

· Institute best practices in the management of compounds and compound data collections

· Maintain an acute awareness of the competitive landscape by regularly monitoring published patent applications, meeting abstracts and scientific literature

· Execute an intellectual property strategy to achieve broad coverage of key compounds while taking into account the competitiveness of the space

· Manage external teams of scientists to achieve early process chemistry milestones such as scale up for toxicology and IND-enabling development

· Communicate regular project status updates to the executive team and key stakeholders

Qualifications

· A PhD or equivalent with a focus on organic/medicinal chemistry

· 12+ years of relevant post-degree work experience in medicinal chemistry

· Experience leading project teams that have successfully advanced candidate molecules to at least early clinical development

· A strong understanding of and ability to work with pharmacological, physicochemical, ADME and pharmacokinetic data to make technically-sound decisions around compound design

· Experience with structure-based and property-based strategies for lead optimization

· Familiarity with chemoinformatic tools, databases and best practices for compound data management

· An outstanding track record of peer-reviewed publications and patent applications that demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, initiative and the ability to collaborate with others

· Excellent teamwork, organizational and interpersonal skills
