The Recount is seeking an enthusiastic and industrious politics producer/creator to join our team, with a focus on creating daily multimedia content for The Recount social and video channels. If you’re ambitious, motivated, and as comfortable around a camera as you are with Canva, this might be the job for you.

This role is best suited for someone who’s extremely online and eager to be a politics beat specialist; a keen interest in the material and formats is a must. You should have a solid understanding of what’s happening across our democracy, from school boards to SCOTUS. You know the key political players. And you’re obsessed with the 2024 election.

You’ll be expected to take daily social assignments, surface viral videos, edit supercuts, pitch your own ideas, and work at the pace of the news cycle (in an election year, that’s no small thing). You’re solutions-oriented and creative about getting where we need to go; adaptability is in your DNA. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset are a must.

You, our ideal candidate, thrive at the intersection of reported journalism and social media. You have a background in editorial content creation, preferably in a newsroom or publishing environment, with an emphasis on social assets and vertical video. Your news judgment is impeccable, you’ve got a good eye for design, and you thrive in a fast-paced environment. Every day might be a little different, and you’re cool with that.

Hard skills are important. You can grab a cable news clip in your sleep. You can make an Instagram carousel look not just good, but great. You should know how to write a short script for social formats and you’re able to shoot your own standups. Your post-production work is clean. Self-starters with solid time management skills will thrive.

This role reports to the Recount’s Editor in Chief and requires being in our Manhattan office 2-3 days a week.

You might be a good fit if you’re…

  • Highly organized and deadline-driven
  • Passionate about political and government issues
  • Experienced with all facets of social video production, soup to nuts
  • Comfortable and authentic on camera (no broadcast news vibes, please)
  • Well-versed in journalistic standards and ethics
  • Immersed in social media and internet culture
  • Able to receive and incorporate feedback
  • An excellent communicator and collaborator
  • Take your work seriously, but not yourself — a sense of humor is a must

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and produce daily social content for The Recount
  • Curate live video feeds and produce daily TV clips and supercuts as needed
  • End-to-end editorial execution: scripting, shooting, editing, publishing
  • Deliver scripts and cuts to appropriate managers for review, and make changes as needed
  • Collaborate with team members to align on both short and long term coverage priorities
  • Adhere to production timelines and meet deadlines

Qualifications

  • 5+ years working with nonfiction video content, preferably in a news environment with short-form vertical video
  • On-camera experience (even if it’s just on your personal accounts)
  • Solid post-production skills for both video and static — After-Effects is a plus
  • Comfortable with all the odds and ends of production for native social formats
  • Ability write short scripts that are clear, accurate, and precise
  • Knowledge of politics news and current events
  • Demonstrated understanding of journalistic standards, practices, and ethics

Benefits

  • Health insurance: medical, dental, and vision
  • 401(k) savings and retirement plan with employer match
  • Generous paid vacation policy
  • Hybrid work environment: 2-3 days/week in our Manhattan office
  • Potential stock option incentives or stock appreciation rights

Who We Are

About The Recount

The Recount is a leading digital media brand reaching over 10 million users a month with social-first content focused on politics, policy, and culture. Our goal is to engage audiences with news-driven storytelling that informs and entertains. In a fractured political landscape, we cut through the noise by providing fact-based information that goes heavy on context. And we’re not above the internet culture driving news – we’re native it to it, after all. But we do believe in holding that culture accountable and using journalism to call it like we see it.

About TNM

We are part of the The News Movement (TNM) family. TNM brings together leading industry figures and the next generation of passionate journalists to help reset how we tell “the news” in an era of declining trust and increasing misinformation. We’re driven by our purpose: to help millions of people around the world be better informed. We’re accurate and impartial, informative and engaging, surprising and entertaining. We emphasize facts and context. We’re transparent and impartial. And we always meet our audiences where they’re at.
