Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies is the largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower people with IDD to form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure jobs, improve communication and advocacy skills, and live independently, while also offering support for their families.

State Director Position Overview

The State Director is responsible for developing and implementing an annual state plan, overseeing daily operations, securing funding, managing programs, and supervising state staff. Key responsibilities include program consistency, success, managing local advisory boards, and ensuring compliance with organizational goals.

Job Duties:

Programs:

  • Oversee statewide program operations and events.
  • Ensure program participant integration into fundraising efforts.
  • Manage program staff and volunteer initiatives.

Fund Development:

  • Develop and implement statewide funding strategies.
  • Manage all fundraising activities, including events and grants.
  • Cultivate donor relationships and manage the stewardship process.

Marketing:

  • Develop and implement a statewide public awareness strategy.
  • Enhance the organization’s presence through media and community involvement.
  • Manage content updates for the state website and communication materials.

Human Resources:

  • Recruit, hire, and train state staff.
  • Set and monitor staff goals, conduct evaluations, and provide professional development.
  • Inspire and motivate staff, ensuring participation in national initiatives.

Operations:

  • Oversee day-to-day infrastructure and office management.
  • Maintain communication with state operations and development teams.
  • Develop and manage the state budget, track expenses, and ensure accurate financial processing.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • 4-7 years of progressive fundraising experience.
  • 3-5 years of management/supervisory experience.
  • Strong persuasive writing, presentation, and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management systems.
  • Ability to inspire, lead teams, and achieve challenging goals.
  • Experience with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
  • Availability for travel, evening, and weekend work.
